Argentina progressively intensified their attack as the second half wore on, calling upon their captain Lionel Messi to unlock the English defense. In the 85th minute, Enzo Fernández seized a pass from Messi and unleashed a powerful long-range strike into the bottom left corner to secure the equalizer. Just seven minutes later, in the second minute of stoppage time, Lautaro Martínez completed the turnabout by leaping to head home another precise cross from Messi, beating England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
England will now face off with France in Saturday’s third-placed game in Miami Gardens, Florida, with Argentina’s dramatic win leading to the final showdown on Sunday against Spain at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where the Albiceleste will look to secure their fourth world championship.
